He joined Indian Administrative Service in 1977 and has worked in various capacities with the Central Government and the Assam Government for several years.
In Ministry of Coal, he worked as Addl. Secretary, Special Secretary and Secretary.
In Ministry of Defence, he was the Joint Secretary in the Dept. of Defence Production. He was also the member secretary to Kelkar Committee set up by the Ministry of Defence
Later he was appointed as part-time Chairman of the Expert Appraisal Committee of Ministry of Environment and Forest which is for Hydro-electric and river projects.
